What is a Doula?

Your birth, Your way

The word doula is a Greek word meaning women’s servant.  A doula's primary role is to emotionally, physically, and educationally support a mother who is expecting, laboring, or is in the postpartum period. The doula’s purpose is to help women have a safe, memorable, and empowering birthing experience by teaching families how to advocate for themselves in the birth process.

About Me

Who I Am

My name is Jessica, I'm 28 years old, and I have been married to my husband Cody for 10 years. We have two beautiful children, Eli (5) and Kevin (18 months) and our sweet fur child, Bear (11). We live in Lawrenceville and are thrilled to be serving birthing families in the North East Atlanta area as well as select clients in Chattanooga, TN.
Cody and I started dating in the Summer of 2007. We attended senior prom together. ( Romantic huh?) We decided to get married in April of 2007 and planned a wedding for December. We've been almost inseparable ever since. The times we were apart were due to Military service. My husband joined the Army in 2010 and we were swept away almost immediately. We moved from our tiny apartment in North Georgia to an even smaller apartment in Huntsville, Alabama. Shortly after we were reassigned to Fort Gordon, Georgia and we loaded up and moved down. 18 months later we were shocked to discover that our first duty station would move us across the globe to Ansbach, Germany, where we lived for 3 years and welcomed our first son, Eli, in 2013. His birth was traumatic and abusive. After a forced, unnecessary induction caused by being "overdue" our son was born via cesarean section under general anesthesia. It took me months to recover physically and years to recover emotionally.
We travelled all over Europe and enjoyed it very much. We grew up. We learned to be independent of our families. We survived a deployment to Afghanistan and another small deployment to Poland. We learned to be parents. Then we were reassigned to Fort Meade, Maryland in 2015 and became pregnant with our second son, Kevin in 2016 about 16 weeks before I completed my Bachelor's degree in Sociology from American Military University. I knew I needed his birth to be different. We knew my husband was leaving the Army before his birth, so we sought out care to last until we moved. I argued with the Obstetrician. I refused cervical exams. I refused blood work and other "essential" things. Then I stopped being seen at 17 weeks when we moved to Texas. I found supportive midwives there, paid for our home birth, and planned! Little did I know that my husband would receive the job offer of a lifetime when I reached my 36th week of pregnancy. We loaded up our things, forfeited the money we had paid for our birth, and moved our family to Lawrenceville. I found a local CPM willing to care for me and set up a payment plan! This birth was happening at home! After a week of prodromal labor, a transfer for suspected acyclinic presentation, a return home, a good long cry in a hot shower, and many hours of labor later, Kevin was born in my bedroom floor at 42 weeks and 1 days gestation perfectly healthy! I had no tearing, no complications, and my heart felt stitched together. Afterward, I sat in my bed after a hot shower holding my 7 pound 5 ounce new babe and i lifted one arm in the air and shouted "My body is NOT broken! It is NOT a Lemon!" and i cried as my midwife agreed with a smile.
I knew then that birth had forever changed me. I knew that I wanted other women to know that birth could be better! Birth could be safer! Birth could be everything they wanted it to be, if only they were given the knowledge they need to break down the barriers to good, safe birth. This is what led me here...to Mamalovin' Holistic Birth Services.
The name "Mamalovin'" came from my husband. I am the quintessential "mama" and I "mother" every person who walks through my door. I want to Mother you through your prenatal, birth, and postpartum journey and spread the Mamalovin' to everyone!

Emily and Phil D.

f you need a doula (if you’re having a baby you need a doula) I highly recommend Jessica at Mamalovin' Holistic Birth Services! I could not have delivered my 9lb. 11oz. baby boy naturally without her! She made sure my birth was exactly what I wanted and supported me through the entire process!

“Good beginnings make a positive difference in the world, so it is worth our while to provide the best possible care for mothers and babies throughout this extraordinarily influential part of life.”
